Rachel joined PLOS as Taxonomy Manager in 2012, after her initial work as a Consulting Editor for PLOS ONE, building the Editorial Board. Before that, Rachel was a member of the Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, where she headed the data curation group of FlyBase, which she joined at its inception in 1992. During the FlyBase years she worked closely with emerging bio-ontology projects including the Gene Ontology and its relatives, particularly the Phenotype Ontology. With a degree in Natural Sciences – Genetics (University of Cambridge) and a PhD in Neurogenetics (University of Wisconsin-Madison) Rachel is delighted to have been in the business through the era of whole genome sequencing, analysis and annotation, and the growth of the Open Access movement, in all its contexts.
